Advice on this product

The room has a major influence on the patient's wellbeing and recovery. But it is light that truly defines the room and makes it tangible. Space and light are inseparably linked.

In doing so, light works not only visually but also emotionally and biologically: Human Centric Lighting (HCL) supports people's health, wellbeing and performance. Since the 1980s, the US researchers Jeffrey C. Hall, Michael Rosbash and Michael W. Young have deciphered the mechanisms that control circadian rhythms. In 2017 they were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

Schyns Biologic Health Light – the extension of classic HCL developed specifically for the healthcare sector, with separately controllable blue components, high colour rendering, seamless daylight simulation and over 90 reference points per day – is available in many of Schyns' medical supply units and medical wall luminaires.

Application examples

A hospital room in which bright examination light is switched on
At the touch of a button, the light switches from the daylight curve to standard-compliant examination lighting in neutral white 4,000 K – optionally with a timed, automatic return to the HCL sequence. The premium version additionally offers 1,000 lux.
A hospital room bathed in pleasant, amber-coloured light
The amber-coloured lighting at 1,800 K can be switched on when required, e.g. before operations or to provide calm. This light colour likewise prepares the patient for falling asleep in the evening.
A hospital room with indirect reading lighting in the evening light
In the evening, the targeted wall lighting gives the patient the freedom to adapt the feel of the room light individually to their needs and to create a homely atmosphere.
A dark hospital room with indirect, greenish lighting
The special, continuous night lighting gives the care staff the option of monitoring the patient without them waking up. The light does not penetrate the closed eyelids.

The Effect of Light

Light has a noticeable effect on a person's vitality and health. The light of the sun is crucial for health and wellbeing – yet modern people spend most of their lives indoors.

To respond to this cultural shift towards an indoor society, every artificial lighting solution should match the characteristics of sunlight as closely as possible.

Numerous studies show that artificial light with unchanging properties such as light colour and light intensity has a negative effect on health, wellbeing and performance.

Over the course of a day, the intensity and spectrum (and thus also the colour temperature) of natural light change continuously. While the midday sun, with its invigorating blue tone, energises us, the evening sun calms us with a pleasantly warm, reddish hue. For people, their wellbeing and all the biological processes associated with it, natural daylight is the definitive reference.

Designing and Controlling Light

Over the course of the day, daylight changes its light colour, illuminance and light direction. An electronic, autonomous lighting control provides the desired dynamic lighting solution depending on the time of day. Here we deliver the complete service from a single source. All required control components come pre-installed and ready to connect in the medical supply units and are prepared, for example, for control via the nurse call system or external switches.

Details that count in everyday life.

Whether care, technology or equipment – small functions make the big difference in everyday use. Our solutions are thought through down to the last detail and developed for what really counts: smooth operation.

Interior design based on the principles of healing architecture creates a supportive and soothing environment for staff and patients. More on the topic

Our contribution to a more humane healthcare system

healing architecture for all senses

We design spaces that provide tangible support to staff and patients.

A modern patient environment must offer more than just functionality.

As part of interior design, we are responsible for ensuring that technical equipment and architectural atmosphere form a harmonious whole. This approach has guided us for many years – as Alphonse Schyns once said: A hospital does not have to look like a hospital. This idea continues to influence our work today. Our products are developed in collaboration with our customers. This direct exchange ensures that every solution works in the everyday environment of clinics and care facilities: clear, robust, hygienic, and well thought-out exactly where it matters most.

Our work follows the principles of healing architecture. We design spaces that provide tangible support to staff and patients, promote calm, and facilitate processes. This is not a fashionable concept, but an approach that has proven itself over decades.

The multisensory approach—healing architecture for all senses—is a central component of this. Light, acoustics, materials, haptics, and intuitive orientation are specifically coordinated to reduce stress, create clarity, and generate a tangibly soothing environment. This creates an atmosphere that is both professional and relaxing.

Our supply units fit seamlessly into this overall concept as an important component: ergonomic, hygienically designed, and durable. They support staff in their daily work and provide patients with safety and orientation.

This is how we combine technical precision, many years of experience, and a clear design philosophy—and consistently think ahead to the patient rooms of the future.
